Description - What to expect

Mount Kenya Hiking Itinerary

◾ Day 1: Nairobi/Sirimon/Judmier Camp (Old Moses Camp) 3-4 hrs., 9km, 860m ascent

Your Mount Kenya hiking experience starts with a convenient pickup from your centrally located Nairobi hotel/ residence and a drive to Nanyuki town for lunch. After approximately 4 hours you will proceed to Sirimon Gate, at 2440m elevation. Starting from the Gate follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest which after some hours of walk becomes heathland. After about 3.5 hours hiking from the gate, the track turns right to Judmier Camp, at 3300 m for dinner and overnight (lunch & dinner included)

◾ Day 2: Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp 6-7hrs, 14km, 900m ascent
After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses the Ontulili River. Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main Mount Kenya peak. Dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp, 4200 m (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

◾ Day 3: Shipton Camp/Point Lenana/Judmaier Camp (Old Moses Camp) 9-10hrs, 21k
Leave at 3.00 am up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving at point Lenana at 6:30 am. After sunrise, descend down to Shipton Camp, 2 hr hike, for breakfast and further, 4 hrs, down to Old Moses Camp for dinner and overnight (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

◾ Day 4: Judmaier Camp/Sirimon/Nairobi 2-3hrs, 9km
After breakfast, walk down through the rainforest for 2 hours to connect with the transport vehicle that will take you back all the way to Nairobi where your Mount Kenya hiking adventure will come to an end.

For this Mount Kenya hiking please dress appropriately. You will need heavy woolen socks and gloves, ankle-length hiking boots, buff/scarf, goretext pants, good quality wind-proof jacket, sleeping bag and all personal items including essential medicine you may need during the trek

About the area

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian 5,199 meters (17,057 feet), Nelion, 5,188 m (17,021 ft), and Point Lenana, 4,985 m (16,355 ft). Mount Kenya is located about 16.5 kilometers (10.3 miles) south of the equator, around 150 km (90 mi) north-northeast of the capital Nairobi.
