About the area

Hallstatt is a small picturesque town that is considered one of the most beautiful lakeside towns in the world. Nestled between the shores of Lake Hallstatt and the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, the UNESCO World Heritage town offers a host of sights and things to do.

Hallstatt’s History
Hallstatt has an incredibly rich history reaching back to the Neolithic Age. Numerous archeological finds prove that humans have settled in the area continuously for over 7,500 years. Salt has been mined in Hallstatt since 2,000 BC, leading to an economic Golden Age around 800 BC. One of the oldest black smithies in the world was also excavated in Hallstatt. The period between 800 and 400 BC is even named the “Hallstatt Period” for the prosperous center of this age of human history in Europe.

During the Middle Ages, Hallstatt lost none of its economic value and was endowed with market rights. Since 1595, a brine pipeline has been transporting the mined salt over 40 kilometers to Ebensee. It is the oldest still active pipeline in the world.

In 1997, Hallstatt and its surrounding area received the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
