What to expect

Your walking tour to Kalamata's historic center starts with a pick up from your hotel and in no more than 10 minutes you will arrive at Ypapanti square to admire the largest church and patron saint of the city. After the 1986 large earthquake that hit Kalamata city as by miracle, the ancient city of Kalamata (Farai) was exposed during excavations just under the sanctuary of Ypapanti’s Church. Parts of the fortification wall of the ancient city, statues and pottery sherds, slept for centuries in the bowels of the church, now exhibited in the Acropolis Museum of Athens.

Continue your walking tour around the city’s castle, the one that Villehardouins’ family decided to build during the 12th century. At its base, you will see two houses well maintained, dated back from 1821, despite the years that have passed and the earthquake that tore down most of the buildings in the city. You will visit a hospital with 200 years of history and admire St. John church built inside a cave used during the Ottoman occupation as a secret school.

Next, visit the city Castle and walk through narrow-cobbled alleys imagining the princesses and knights occupying these fortified walls. Continue with a visit to the monastery of nuns. Discover how nuns were the first ones taught how to cultivate the silkworm and the art of weaving silk handkerchiefs, a craft that is vibrant up this day.

Continue your walk to visit the oldest church of Agioi Apostoloi, the older church in the city build on the 11th century AC. Explore the picturesque square around the church, full of stores, coffee shops and restaurants. Take some time to relax, enjoy your drink in one of their cafes or do your shopping of souvenirs and some lovely local products.

Continue your walk along the main commercial street and admire some impressive neoclassical buildings before you stop in one of the several restaurants for a delicious lunch at which point your city walking tour comes to an end.
