Overview

Would you like to do some ski touring but you are not familiar with the area? Do you dream about skiing down Mt Slogen? Then you should join us for a 5-day ski touring adventure in Stranda. We have put together a great skiing week for the dedicated skier who’s keen to explore the Norwegian fjord region on a pair of skis.

Description - What to expect

The Sunnmøre Alps are famous for their alpine, rough peaks, and stunning fjord views. The mountains peaks stand at around 1,500 m and, when the conditions are right, skiers have the opportunities to ski all the way down to the fjord. Stranda makes a great starting place for ski touring in this area and is only an hour's drive from Ørsta/Volda, Geiranger, Stryn, Stordal, Hjørundfjord, and Hornindal.

Many first ascents in the area were made by famous British mountaineers like Wiliam Cecil Slingsby and Charles Watson Patchell in the early 1900s. They came back year after year and have left a lasting mark on the area. Patchell also set up Patchell-hut at the foot of Mt Slogen, whereas Slingsby established his own climbing route (Slingsby-route) up from Villa Norangdal to the top of Mt Kvitegga.

Itinerary
◾ Arrival day
First night arrival at Stranda Hotel for your check-in procedures. You’ll meet your guide for your pre-trip briefing, equipment check and go through some basic information about your adventure whilst you enjoy a 2-course dinner.

◾ 1st day Wednesday
After a delicious breakfast, you’ll meet your guide for your morning briefing. The day will start with a short avalanche awareness workshop and some practical companion rescue training. The daily itinerary will vary based on weather, avalanches conditions and group skills but a good option to start the weekend may be an ascent of approximately 1000 vertical meters to the classic Blæja with a final descent down in the powder valley. Rest in the hotel and enjoy a 2-course dinner.

◾ 2nd day Thursday
After the first day at Blæja, it is time to choose from one of the many classic summits in the Sunnmøre Alps. Maybe a trip up to Blåhorna for some cool skiing and picturesque views over Storfjorden will be a perfect adventure for the day. Back to the Stranda Hotel in the afternoon to enjoy an outside Après-ski before dinner.

◾ 3rd day Friday
On day 3, you will have an early start to drive up into the valley towards Liasetra. Here we’ll leave the cars and get ready for the day’s big goal Store Brekketind and further into Patchellhytta.

After getting into the valley we will start the ascent over the glacier and up towards the summit. You will be able to ski all the way down to Patchellhytta. We will cook dinner at the hut and finish the evening celebrating our day by the fireplace surrounded by majestic mountains.

◾ 4th day Saturday
Today´s goal is the summit of Slogen. From the doorstep of the hut, you will be able to see the summit the Queen of the Sunnmøre Alps. After a couple of hours, the real climb begins and, right below the summit, skis will need to be strapped to backpacks to “boot pack” to the top. Skiing down from Slogen is an unforgettable experience as we slide all the way to Patchellhytta for one more night in the comfort of the beautiful hut in this remote wilderness.

◾ 5th day Sunday
From Patchellhytta you can admire the surrounding 1,500 m high peaks and get the challenge to choose your final skiing adventure. A cool finish to the week can be to climb Bolten, a not too well-known summit that offers some great skiing opportunities. Your 5-day adventure has finally come to an end before we drive you back to your hotel.
