Description - What to expect
Your Heraklion to Balos Beach starts with a convenient pick-up from your hotel or other designated place. Drive towards the west side of Crete in order to reach the port of Kissamos Kasteli.After your escort gives you all the necessary information about the cruise, arrive at the port where the Gramvousa ferry is waiting for you to start the cruise. Your tour guide will collect the money for the boat tickets from you so you can skip the lines at the ticket office.
At about 10:20 am set off for the island of Gramvousa which takes approximately 45 minutes. On the ferry, there are self-service dishes, meals, or snacks. Sit back on a deck chair or in the lounge and admire the rugged cliff edges of Crete.
Once you arrive at the island of Gramvousa you can either have a swim or you can take a hike to the top of the island to the Venetian fortress. There you have 2.5 hours before you continue to the Balos lagoon, a 20 minutes ride away.
As soon as you arrive at Balos Beach you will have about 3 hours to enjoy yourself. You may at any time go back to the boat for food or also hire umbrellas if the heat is too intense. When you have enjoyed a swim and relaxed at the lagoon, the boat will take you straight back to the port of Kissamos. This is a great photo opportunity as the sun is setting behind you.
At 6:00 pm the ferry arrives at the port and the journey from Heraklion to Balos beach and the Gramvousa paradise island comes to an end. Return time in Heraklion is approximately 8.00 pm

Gramvousa island is located 20km northwest of Kissamos, opposite the imposing Cape of Gramvousa and 2 miles northwest of the famous lagoon of Balos. Gramvousa is famous for its historical Venetian fortress, which still stands at a height of 137m, over the beach.The remains of a Venetian castle, built in 1579-84, at a height of 137 meters above the natural harbor of the island, remind the visitor of its past glory. The position of the castle was strategic since it protected the entire northeastern Crete. Its size still impresses everyone: it has a triangular shape, with each side exceeding one kilometer.
